Learn to look out the windows

Dec 3, 2009

Stop looking forward, through the windshield. Through that piece of glass is the future, and hopefully a good one. Focusing ever more intently on the future is a sure way to end up unhappy, wondering where your life went.

Instead, look out the windows, at the world around you.

If you’re actually driving the car, then for goodness sake keep your eyes on the road. Passengers, on the other hand, peel your eyes away from the destination. You’ll get their eventually, and you staring forward won’t change that one bit. Instead of focusing on where you’re going, enjoy where you are right now.

The future is a beatiful thing. It’s full of surprises, mystery, and who knows what else. I’m not for a moment suggesting that you stop caring about the future. But don’t ever let your focus on the future let you ignore today. Right now, wonderful things are happening. There are interesting people to talk to. Beautiful sites to see. Kids to spend time with. A spouse to make dinner for. Never forget to look out the windows and enjoy the ride.
