If you always want more, you’ll never have enough.

Wanting more comes naturally to us. Cavemen who had one deerskin rug wanted two. During the California gold rush, folks who found one gold nugget wanted to find two. People today who have a good job want a great job. Apartment dwellers dream of upgrading to a huge house.

Whether it’s money, stuff or status, people are hard-wired to want more of it. Much of our progress over the centuries can be attributed to this desire for bigger/better/faster/stronger, so its not completely bad….. But…

If you always want more, you’ll never have enough.

Keeping your focus intently on having “more” will probably get you more. Once you have more, you’ll want more still. And then more. The one thing that this desire and focus won’t bring is happiness. It won’t bring contentedness.

As the years pass, and you continue to strive for more – more stuff, more money, more recognition…. You will probably get it. Desire combined with hard work is a powerful thing. You are likely to end up with everything that you think you want.

Everything you think you want.

Years of unbending focus on more comes at a price. Namely, enjoying what you have today.

Instead of enjoying your comfortable, carefree apartment life, you’re busy working your tail off so you can buy that big dream house. Instead of spending more time with your wife and kids, you’re racking up the hours at the office, so you can get that promotion and corner office that you’ve had your eye on.

You get the picture. Wanting more isn’t necessarily bad… But you need to temper it. Enjoy what you have in your life now. Spend time with your loved ones. More will come along in time – why not enjoy everything you have today?

I do want more. The catch is I am obliviously happy with what I have. Although, if I didn’t want more I would probably not be the person I am. I do agree there is a line. I think ambition is good, and doesn’t that come with want? Love your site :-)

Ambition is certainly good, to a point. If there weren’t ambitious people in the world, it wouldn’t be the awesome place that it is.

But sometimes we’re too ambitious, and never really slow down to enjoy how great our life is right now. That’s the message I’m shooting for.
