How to keep Christmas from adding more clutter

We’re almost at that wonderful time of year again. You know, the time when we spend time with family, put up lights, display and decorate trees. Oh, and lest I forget, give and receive tons of gifts. Great stuff, right?

Everything’s fantastic, that is, until all the presents are opened, and you realize, Wow, that’s a lot of stuff.

Not exactly what you’re looking for as an aspiring minimalist. But, you don’t want to be rude and refuse gifts – that’s not exactly acting in the Christmas Spirit. So, what in the world can you do?

Have a plan ready ahead of time.

Longtime readers are familiar with a rule that I like to call the One in Two Out rule. It’s exactly like it sounds – for every single thing you bring into your home, you must get rid of two. That way, you can still get the things you want, without adding clutter to your home. In fact, you’ll be decluttering at the same time. Nifty.

So this year, plan in advance to enforce this rule. If you get 10 gifts for Christmas, you’ll need to find 20 things that you just don’t need anymore. Go ahead, start making your list now.
