Android is an Asshole

Jack Shedd of Big Contrarian doesn’t think very highly of Android. In fact, he thinks it’s an asshole. No really, he said exactly that:

There’s a sense, not just from reviewers, but from fans of the device, that what Android really needs is just killer hardware.
Which is just absolute horse shit.
Android is an asshole of an operating system.

Some of the points he makes include redundant dialog boxes, difficultly uninstalling / closing applications, and general non-intuitivness of the OS.

As an iPhone fan, I can say that none of these things happen on the iOS. The iPhone is extremely intuitive to use, and therefore, very simple. It lets you complete the task that you need to complete, and get on with your life. There’s nothing to fight with, nothing to figure out. That’s the way any modern operating system needs to be – especially when it comes to mobile devices.

While I agree that the iPhone is a superlative device and I would love to have one, I’m not OK with that AT&T thing that comes along with it – from a reliability or a financial standpoint.

For my purposes (checking email, reading blogs, keeping up with Twitter – and – oh – RELIABLY making and receiving calls), my Android phone on T-Mobile makes me quite happy.

Does iPhone have multitasking yet?

Cynthia,
Thanks for stopping by and taking the time to comment. You do make a great, though unfortunate point. AT&T certainly has some service, depending on which parts of the country you’re in. If you’re in one of the rough areas, or travel there frequently, the iPhone goes from being a powerful yet simple tool to simply frustrating.

If a phone can’t function as a phone, it’s just going to piss you off, and you’re not going to get any work done.

That’s why I’m glad that we have choices – in your case, T-Mobile and an Android phone.

Though I do feel the need to ask – if iPhone was available (without hacking) on the T-Mobile network – would you use it? Or are you quite satisfied with Android?

P.S. I almost forgot – with the recent release of iOS4, the iPhone does have (limited) multitasking capabilities. While it’s not full-fledged like Android, it does offer quite a few benefits. Namely, much better battery life compared to Android, and also a seamless system where you never have to “manage” background applications. It’s all handled intelligently by the OS.

I would STRONGLY consider the iPhone if I could have it on my current T-Mobile plan and all I had to do was buy the hardware – largely due to the wide number of apps that are only available on the iPhone, and the better quality camera.
